A really useful way to quickly zero in on that for which you are searching
is to limit your search to pages which have your search terms right in their

A Google search of "spam blockers" turns up 637,000 hits. (A search without

British police say the containers were manufactured and supplied by a
Thiruvananthapuram firm

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An important clue to the recent terrorist attacks in
London may lie in plastic food storage containers exported from Kerala to
the U.K. and sold through retail outlets in that country.

A Thirvananthapuram-based company, which exports moulded plastic articles to
the U.K., was contacted by the London Metropolitan Police investigating the
bomb attacks. The BBC reported the Anti-Terrorist Branch's claim that all
five bombs that failed to explode "were placed inside dark-coloured
rucksacks or sports bags" and "all of them were made using the same type of
plastic food storage containers."

The British police have now found that the 6.25-litre containers were
manufactured and supplied by `Family Plastics,' a manufacturer of injection
moulded plastic articles at Manvila here. The company is a Rs. 4-crore
manufacturing and export unit owned by Simson A. Fernandez, a local
resident. London shopkeepers stocking similar containers have been asked to
contact the police if they had sold five or more such containers recently.

Fasting ascetic passes away

BHOPAL(M.P.): Thousands of people flocked to the cremation of a 75-year-old
woman here after she gained attention by slowly fasting to death over six
months in a rare example of an ancient salvation rite of the Jain religion,
her family said. Ratan Bai died on Friday in Ganj Basoda, a small town in
Vidhsha district, 120 km north of Bhopal, her son-in-law, Satish Jain, said.

Like Hindus and Buddhists, Jains believe in reincarnation. Salvation is
obtained by personal effort - leading austere, non-violent lives. A few
Jains undertake "sallekhna," or voluntary death, a ritual for ending the
cycle of death and rebirth. They stop eating and meditate until they die. In
July last year, Ms. Bai decided to undergo "sallekhna." Accompanied by her
three sons and three daughters, she visited the head priest of the Jain
religion, Brahmanand, in nearby Katangi town, Mr. Jain said. The head priest
gave his approval for her to undertake the ritual.

She formally became an ascetic 20 days ago at a ceremony, he said. ``She
voluntarily stopped the intake of solid food six months ago. She took only
fruit juices and water. She stopped taking even fruit juices 12 days ago and
restricted herself to drinking small quantity of water everyday until she
died on Friday,'' said Deepesh Jain, her 19-year-old grandson. Ganj Basoda
has a population of more than 100,000, but many people travelled from nearby
villages in recent weeks as Ms. Bai's fast got extensive media attention.

``This was a way of ultimate purification of the soul,'' said Kiran Godre, a
Jain nun, who looked after Ms. Bai during her ritual. ``She became a saint
in the eyes of the Jain community and hundreds of people visited her during
her fasting days to pay their respect.'' -

Terrible tragedy at Bharat Bhavan / Verdict in Mavoor toxic effluent case upheld /

BHOPAL: Nearly 300 paintings, including priceless ones by J. Swaminathan and
M. F. Husain, have been destroyed following flooding of the basement of
Bharat Bhavan, the massive multi-arts complex here, in the wake of a
cloudburst.

Bharat Bhavan Director Pawan Jain said on Wednesday the damage was
extensive. Over 10,000 paintings - oil on canvas and watercolour - were
stored in the basement.

There was a sudden cloudburst on Monday evening, and a section of the
basement was flooded. Most of the material kept there was soaked. According
to Mr. Jain, 200 to 300 paintings, including the ones by Husain and
Swaminathan, were destroyed. Well over 2,000 paintings were damaged.

Criticising "construction and detailing" of the Bharat Bhavan complex,
designed by the renowned architect Charles Correa, Mr. Jain said: "Care had
not been taken to prevent seepage or protect the building from the Bhopal
Upper Lake's backwater thrust, which is a major cause of seepage at the
floor level. A committee of technical experts that was set up to study the
problem of seepage had raised this issue."

Verdict in Mavoor toxic effluent case upheld

Firm's officials have to undergo SI of one-and-a-half years

KOZHIKODE: The Kozhikode District and Sessions Court on Wednesday upheld the
verdict of the Chief Judicial Magistrate's (CJM) Court sentencing the
defunct Mavoor unit of Grasim Industries (Pulp Division) president R. N.
Saboo, and three other top officials to simple imprisonment of
one-and-a-half years and imposing a penalty of Rs.5,000 each for allowing
toxic effluents to flow from the factory into the Chaliyar river.

District Court Judge Thomas P. Joseph endorsing the lower court's verdict of
November 13, 2003, convicted the other officials, including the factory
Technical Wing joint executive president C. Kochukrishnan, the Technical
vice-president C. L. Gathani and the Processing Department general manager
M. P. Raja.

While dismissing the appeal of the accused against the CJM court verdict,
the District Court also issued summons asking them to appear before the CJM
court on August 8 to enforce the conviction. It confirmed the findings of
the CJM court that the factory had discharged untreated and toxic effluent
into the Chaliyar river causing injury to public health and aquatic
organisms.

This was also the first time top management officials of a industrial unit
in the State had been convicted on account of discharging untreated
effluents from a factory into a river. The verdict was based on a case filed
by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) environmental engineer
A. K. Hansraj on October 3, 1998.

Detectives now believe the London bombings were carried out by four
British-born men in what were possibly the country's first suicide attacks.
Security sources said it was likely at least three of the men, said to
be of Pakistani descent, are dead, after belongings were found at the
scenes.

The details emerged as explosives were found in Leeds and Luton after
a series of raids. One man has been arrested.

The BBC's Frank Gardner said an expert may have offered the bombers
guidance.

Indonesian Maid Miyati Sent to Jail

JEDDAH, 12 July 2005 - Nour Miyati, the Indonesian maid who was severely
injured and lost limbs as a result of alleged torture by her sponsor - has
been jailed. She was removed from hospital yesterday evening and taken to an
unspecified public jail. Her embassy was not informed. Indonesian labor
attache, M. Sukiarto, confirmed that the embassy was not informed of this
development. "I'm very disappointed. I don't know why she was sent to jail,"
he told Arab News.

In March, Miyati was taken to a Riyadh hospital by her sponsor in critical
condition and severe injuries causing gangrene to her fingers, toes and part
of her right foot; some of her fingers and toes had to be amputated. At
first she claimed that her sponsor tied her up for a month in a bathroom and
beat her severely injuring her eyes and knocking several of her teeth out.

A report in May said that M iyati had retracted earlier accusations that her
sponsor tied her up and tortured her. Consequently she was charged with
making false allegations against her sponsor.

The embassy was surprised by that report and asked for a reinvestigation
because they claimed that Miyati was mentally unstable and under pressure
because the embassy staff, her lawyer and the National Society for Human
Rights were denied access to her during the investigation. Her sponsor and
his wife were charged with assault and mistreatment; he was released from
jail on bail and both are awaiting trial.

Former Worldcom boss Bernard Ebbers wept openly as he was sentenced to 25
years in jail for his part in the scandal which brought down the firm.
Mr Ebbers was found guilty of fraud and conspiracy in March, following
revelations of an $11bn (£6.2bn) accounting fraud at Worldcom in 2002.

The 63-year-old was also guilty of seven counts of filing false documents.

The sentence was handed down by federal judge Barbara Jones, who earlier
this week rejected his bid for a new trial.

The sentence was the toughest yet in a string of corporate scandals in the
US.

Mr Ebbers did not address the court. Instead, he wiped his eyes with a white
tissue. Meanwhile, Kristie Ebbers, his wife, cried quietly.

When he watched Halley's Comet through binoculars many years ago, Shyam
Bhaskaran used to wonder if he would be able to pursue his cosmic passion.
Little did he realise then that the hand of destiny would lead him to the
centrestage of a comet mission.

On Monday, the second generation Indian American scientist led the
navigation team of NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft that flawlessly crashed
into comet Tempel 1 as part a grand project to gain insights into the
origins of the solar system.

Bhaskaran has now worked as a navigator on several NASA missions at the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) n Pasadena, California.

Even so, the Deep Impact was something very special, he said in a telephone
interview amid widespread relief and satisfaction that everything has worked
to clockwork precision.

Compared with sending a spacecraft to Jupiter, landing rovers on Mars and
even Stardust's technical feats, Deep Impact presented unprecedented
challenges, recalls Bhaskaran.

The kind of precision needed here was unimaginable, with the impactor having
to hit the comet at a speed of 23,000 miles per hour.

Pak renovates Hindu temple

Work has begun on a $20,000 project to renovate and expand the sole Hindu
temple in Lahore that was damaged in the wake of the Babri mosque demolition
in 1992.

The Evacuee Trust Property Board is overseeing the repair work on the
Krishna temple, which some believe is at least 80 years old.

"The lone temple had been in a dilapidated condition since the locals
attacked it in the wake of Babri mosque destruction. The mob not only
removed the idol of Lord Krishna but also damaged the main rooms after which
cracks appeared in the main walls," The News reported on Saturday.

The local Hindu community, led by Manohar Chand, had long been demanding the
renovation of the temple. However, the paucity of funds and the anger of the
locals over the Babri mosque razing had been holding up the project, the
newspaper added.

The restoration work involves refurbishing the main prayer room and two
adjacent rooms, the construction of two new halls, a community kitchen and a
four-room hostel.

1979: Skylab tumbles back to Earth
The US space laboratory, Skylab I, plunged to Earth this evening scattering
debris across the southern Indian Ocean and sparsely populated Western
Australia.
All week there has been mounting speculation over where the spacecraft would
come down. It has been in orbit six years - for the past five of those it
has been unoccupied.

Skylab's last signal was recorded at 1611 GMT. Less than an hour later a
tracking station at Ascension Island in the South Atlantic confirmed the
solar panels were beginning to peel off as the craft descended.

The 77.5 ton Skylab could break into as many as 500 pieces, including a
5,100lb (2,310kg) airlock shroud and a 3,900lb (1,767kg) lead safe to
protect film from radiation, which are expected to survive the heat of
re-entry into the earth's atmosphere.

Head of the Nasa task force monitoring Skylab, Richard Smith, said they had
already received reports of hot debris, which had lit up the night sky, from
several points in Western Australia.

'Edge of Cornwall'

Dozens of residents reported seeing debris falling near Kalgoolie, 370 miles
(595km) northeast of Perth.

Indian arrested in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian police have arrested an Indian in connection with
the theft of 8,000 documents from the country's Immigration Department in
Kuantan province, a media report said on Monday.

District police chief Kamal Pasha said the suspect had an Indian passport
with a pass sticker number which was believed to be stolen from the
Immigration Department in Kuantan last year.

"His passport number was found to be the same as that of the stolen
passport," the police official said at the end of a search operation against
special crimes in the capital here.

The man, who was not identified by the 'New Straits Times' daily, was stated
to be 42-year-old and detained in Kuala Lumpur's Jalan Masjid area.

Last May, some men broke into the Kuantan Immigration Department and fled
with 8,000 ringgit (Rs 90,000) as well as 8,000 documents belonging to the

Compensation for woman kept in custody

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court, on Wednesday, directed the State Government to
pay P.E. Arifa of Perumbavoor a compensation of Rs.50,000, with 8 per cent
interest from May 24, 1997, for being kept in police custody illegally for
80 hours.

Justice A.K. Basheer issued the directive while allowing a writ petition
filed by Ms. Arifa. According to her, her husband, a wholesale dealer in
fabrics, had given her brother a certain quantity of fabric on credit.
Later, the latter refused to pay the money, and a criminal case was filed
against him.

When she came to her parental house to participate in a ceremony organised
in connection with the death of her father, her brother threatened her and
demanded that the case be withdrawn. He called the police who took her to
the Ernakulam Vanitha Police Station as she refused to accede to the demand.

New York Times journalist jailed

NEW YORK: The New York Times reporter Judith Miller was on Wednesday night
sent to jail for refusing to reveal her source in an investigation into the
leak of an undercover CIA agent's name.

But in a dramatic conclusion to a two-year saga, her fellow defendant, the
Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper, avoided the same fate when he agreed
to testify in an 11th-hour volte-face.

Mr. Cooper told a federal judge that the source had released him from his
commitment to keep his identity secret.

``Last night I hugged my son goodbye and told him it might be a long time
before I see him again,'' Mr. Cooper told the district court judge, Thomas
Hogan.

The world's longest-married: now a claim from Kerala

KOTTAYAM: It was no case of love at first sight, but a truly arranged Christian marriage in Kerala's Central Travancore region, where the family patriarchs called the shots.

 

And when 13-year-old Philipose Thomas tied the knot with Sosamma on a sunny February day he was a Class 7 student and the 12-year-old bride, one class his junior. "After marriage I went to school and completed Class 9 ," said Mr. Thomas. But Ms. Sosamma was less lucky on that count. "She went to school till the following [Malayalam month of] Meenom," he said, glancing at his wife sitting across him on another bed at their son Mathew's house at Pampady near here.

 

Today, having scored a century, Mr. Thomas is in the race for a world record, dutifully supported by Sosamma, as he has always been for the past 86 years. Mr. Thomas (100 years) and Ms. Sosamma (99 years and six months) have completed 86 years and four months together, a lot more years than the official chroniclers have recorded for longest married couples.

 

The two competitors they have in the race are in the United States, the official one being a couple married for 81 years and another one, still in the race, who have been married for 82 years (The Hindu, June 24).

 

As per the records of the St. Simon's Jacobite Syrian Church, the marriage was solemnised on February 17, 1918 (Medom 18, 1093 of the Malayalam era). It was on that day that Philipose Thomas, son of Peelikunju and Elizuba of Kadavumbhagom House, who belonged to the St. John's Church, Pamapdy wed Sosamma Thomas, daughter of Korah Chacko and Aleyamma of Kalimkoottil House, members of the St. Simon's Church, Velloor.

A new Sappho poem

Since classical times, Sappho has been a source of fascination and romantic construction. The ancients, who had nine books of her poems at their disposal, were unstinting in their admiration. Some called her a tenth Muse. Strabo, writing in the time of Augustus, calls her a wonder, “for in this whole span of recorded time we know of no woman to challenge her as a poet even in the slightest degree”. In modern times, with only fragments of her poetry remaining, she has remained one of the most famous and evocative names from antiquity, a figure viewed by some with narrowed, by others with widened eyes; a socio-historical enigma, a littérateurs’ Lorelei, a feminist icon, a scholars’ maypole.

 

It is difficult to judge her for ourselves when so little of her work remains.

 

Here is the poem in my own restoration and translation. The words in square brackets are supplied by conjecture.

Guruvayur Devaswom to file IT returns by July 15

GURUVAYUR: Guruvayur Devaswom has assured the Income Tax (IT) authorities
that tax returns of the Devaswom for the last 10 years will be filed by July
15. Devaswom sources told The Hindu here that the chartered accountants firm
that had been appointed auditor of the Devaswom had communicated this to the
IT department. Income-Tax authorities have, in turn, agreed that they would
not proceed on the notices issued to the banks that have accepted deposits
from the Devaswom. The IT Department had earlier warned the banks of
punitive action for not deducting TDS on the deposits of the Guruvayur
Devaswom, as it did not have IT exemption.

On The Pakistan-Iran-India Gas Pipeline

As reports come in of India, Iran and Pakistan setting up a joint working
group to take forward the pipeline project to bring Iranian gas to India,
the United States is stepping up its pressure to scuttle the project. The
US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, has conveyed to the Pakistani Foreign
Minister that the project could violate the Iran and Libya sanctions Act.
This blatant pressure by the United States should be rejected by both India
and Pakistan.

The Prime Minister, during his visit to Washington next month, must convey
India's stand that it will not give up this project due to American
pressure.

NEW DELHI: Viswanathan Anand produced two brilliantly-crafted victories with
white pieces to overwhelm World champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov 2.5-1.5 and won
the Ciudad de Leon rapid chess title in Leon, Spain on Sunday.

After suffering a reverse in the opening game of the four-game title-match,
Anand bounced back to annihilate the Uzbek in just 33 moves of Sicilian
Najdorf. Anand dominated the proceedings, offered a piece on the kingside
and launched the decisive attack.

The third game in Sicilian Paulsen was drawn after 68 moves and it was left
to Anand to take the initiative with white pieces to claim the title ahead

NASA gives Indian names to rocks on Mars

KOLKATA: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has given
Indian names to certain types of rocks on Mars, a senior geologist on the
American agency's Mars Mission said on Monday.

``We shall disclose the names soon after NASA gives clearance to make this
classified information public,'' planetary geologist Amitabha Ghosh, now on
a tour to India, told PTI.

The rocks were named in consultation with Indian geophysicists and
astrophysicists.

One nation, uninsured

HARRY TRUMAN tried to create a national health insurance system. Public
opinion was initially on his side: Jill Quadagno's book, One Nation,
Uninsured, tells us that in 1945, 75 per cent of Americans favoured national

shake-out among Asia's budget airlines, and some are likely to be

Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is barred from holding office for six years after she being found guilty of electoral corruption.

But Mrs Gandhi rejected calls to resign and announced plans to appeal to the Supreme Court.

The verdict was delivered by Mr Justice Sinha at Allahabad High Court. It came almost four years after the case was brought by Raj Narain, the premier's defeated opponent in the 1971 parliamentary election.

Mrs Gandhi, who gave evidence in her defence during the trial, was found guilty of dishonest election practices, excessive election expenditure, and of using government machinery and officials for party purposes.

The judge rejected more serious charges of bribery against her.

Mrs Gandhi began an appeal against her conviction for corrupt electoral practices.

When opponents threatened to start a campaign of civil disobedience in protest at her refusal to resign, she controversially declared a state of emergency, claiming there was a plot to disrupt democracy.

Thousands were arrested, including about 20 MPs, and the Indian media was censored.

In August 1975 the Lok Sabha passed legislation to clear Gandhi of her corruption convictions retroactively.

She continued to lead her country until 1977, and then again from 1980 until 1984, when she was assassinated by two of her bodyguards.

1964: Nelson Mandela jailed for life

The leader of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, Nelson Mandela, has been jailed for life for sabotage.

Seven other defendants, including the former secretary-general of the banned African National Congress (ANC), Walter Sisulu, were also given life prison sentences.

Crowds gathered silently outside the court building in Pretoria's Church Square waiting for the verdict to be handed down. Hundreds of police patrolled the area.

The Rivonia trial - named after the suburb of Johannesburg where the defendants were arrested - began eight months ago, with Mandela, 46, and his co-defendants proudly confessing their guilt to plotting to destroy the South African state by sabotage.

As members of the ANC - the main African nationalist movement - they have campaigned for an end to the oppression of black South Africans.

But the movement was banned in 1960 following the Sharpeville massacre and campaigners decided they had no choice but to resort to violent means.

Struggle for equal rights

Mandela - a lawyer by training - told the court earlier: "I do not deny that I planned sabotage. I did not plan it in a spirit of recklessness nor because I have any love of violence. I planned it as a result of a calm and sober assessment of the political situation that had arisen after many years of tyranny, exploitation and oppression of my people by the whites."

His co-accused included: Walter Sisulu, Dennis Goldberg, Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba, Elias Mosoaledi, Andrew Alangeni - all ANC officials and Ahmed Kathrada, the former leader of the Indian National Congress.

Lawyer for the defendants, Harold Hansen QC said: "These accused represent the struggle of their people for equal rights. Their views represent the struggle of the African people for the attainment of equal rights for all races in this country."

But the judge, President Quartus de Wet, said he was not convinced by their claim to have been motivated by a desire to alleviate the grievances of the African people in this country.

Judge de Wet said: "People who organise revolution usually plan to take over the government as well through personal ambition."

However, he stopped short of the imposing the supreme penalty of death.

The convicted men were cheered as they left court in a police lorry. The crowd was dispersed without any serious incident.

Gmail Tip #5: The 'Plus' Side of Gmail

Like many Email providers, Gmail supports the standard "plus" addressing scheme. But just what is it, and how can it help me?

The "plus" method of addressing lets you add additional words to your account name (the "left side" of your email address.) For example, if your email address is "john.doe@gmail.com", you could add "+club" when you give your email address to members of a club to which you belong. So, your email address would now be "john.doe+club@gmail.com". But why would you want to do this? Think of the "plus" word as an extra "keyword" or "tag" that you can use to better manage your messages.

Using our example, say you email an invitation to your friends in a club asking them to rsvp to the invitaion. You ask them to reply to "john.doe+nope@gtmail.com" when sending you a responseif they don't want to come, and reply to "john.doe+ofcourse@gmail.com". Assuming they follow your directions, You can then set up a Gmail Filters to automatically route emails to specific Labels based on the addresses. It's a simple example, but the uses can be numerous.

Another use is when you are shopping online. When asked for an email address, use something like "john.doe+amazon@gmail.com". That way, whenever you get future emails addressed to that address, you'll know that it's either from Amazon directly or from someone to whom they sold your email address. This can be a somewhat effctive way to track spam. Just be aware that not all email systems recognize or accept "plus" addresses. In fact, some spammers even strip it out completely, but it's a cool tool, none the less. THe best way is to just try it and see if it works for your application!

'We could have concrete evidence against Jet (India)'

The head of the Jet Airways Inc, which has made allegations against the Jet
Airways (India) before the US Department of Transportation that it had links
with global terrorist organizations, has said her company was now in
possession of concrete evidence against the private Indian airliner.

"We are in the process of completing our independent investigations against
Jet Airways (India). We would make these documents public, as soon as our
investigations are over," Nancy M Heckerman, the chief executive officer and
president Jet Airways Inc. told HindustanTimes.com.

The statement comes in the wake of the Jet Airways (India) announcing that
it would file a defamation case against the American airlines for levying,
what it claimed as baseless, unsupported, offensive and defamatory
allegations against it and chairman Naresh Goyal.

Stating that her company stood by what she said in the objection petition
before the US Department of Transportation against the Jet Airways India,
Heckerman said: "We have been doing our own independent investigation. Soon,
we intend to come out with very substantial documented things in support of

Mad rush for Re-1 air plan

Deccan offer leads to closed counters, jammed phones, website

MUMBAI, JUNE 7: As a special Air Deccan scheme for tickets at Re 1 opened
today, the Mumbai airport was besieged by crowds that descended on the
domestic terminal, some reaching as early as 5 am. Others frantically
dialled the call centre number while many others logged on to the official
website.

However, customers were greeted with a 'Closed' sign at the airline's
counter. Others complained that the call centre number was constantly busy
and that the website displayed nothing but an advertisement. The lucky ones,
though, managed to skirt the rush to grab some of the 2,000 tickets on
offer.

Captain Gopinath, Air Deccan's MD, admitted: ''The system collapsed because
we did not anticipate so many hits.'' But he offered some consolation to
those who returned disappointed. ''There are still a few tickets available.
We are trying to revive the system and once that happens, these tickets will
be up for sale.''

L.K. Advani's statement about Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah's espousal of
secularism hangs precariously on a single quote, taken from Jinnah's
Presidential speech to the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan, delivered on
August 11, 1947.
In the speech, Jinnah said: "You are free; you are free to go to your
temples, you are free to go to your mosques or to any other place of worship
in the state of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion or caste or creed -
that has nothing to do with the business of the state ... you will find that
in course of time Hindus would cease to be Hindus and Muslims would cease to
be Muslims, not in the religious sense, because that is the personal faith
of each individual, but in the political sense as citizens of the state."

Jinnah's early discomfort with Islamic orthodoxy is a well-documented fact,
and so is his lack of acceptability among the Muslim masses.

But the spiralling demand for Pakistan between 1940 and 1947 had transformed
Jinnah as a staunch advocate of Pakistan and a communalist. It also changed
the fortunes of the Muslim League for the better.

While the ire of the sangh parivar against Mr. Advani is understandable, it
has more to do with Mr. Advani's apology for the demolition of the Babri
Masjid than his remarks on Jinnah.

also :- Unlike Jinnah, Nehru was not given to invective. His pet phrase was
"fantastic nonsense". Neither was Vallabhbhai Patel. His forte was the
cutting retort and heavy sarcasm. When a ruler of an Indian state threatened
to support the British if the Congress pushed him hard, Patel retorted:
"That does not surprise me. When the Moghuls were ruling you gave them your
daughters to preserve your thrones".
As Home Minister, he had no qualms about reading letters intercepted by the
Intelligence Bureau. Neither had Nehru, for that matter. On March 4, 1949,
Patel wrote to Nehru, while forwarding the copy of a letter from Ashutosh
Lahiri to V.D. Savarkar. It referred to the beautiful Sharaddha Mata's claim
that she was "in active contact with you for the purpose of changing your
mental outlook". Tongue firmly in cheek, Patel asked Nehru: "I should like
to know if you have experienced any influence of the ethereal inspiration
and whether the new contact has been responsible for any new development"
(Sardar Patel's Correspondence; ed. Durga Das; Vol. 8, page 116).
It must not be left unsaid. Decline in elegant invective reflects decline in
the calibre and literary equipment of politicians; in India as well as
elsewhere.

Dubai experiences major power outage

Dubai: Dubai was thrown into chaos following a major power cut which
brought the city to a standstill.
Air conditioning units stopped, traffic lights went dead and emergency
generators kicked into action as the effects took their toil.

The power went down at 9.50am from Jebel Ali to Deira and Bur Dubai.

Police officers were out in force at the major interchanges and
roundabouts as vehicles battled their way through un-signaled junctions.

One motorist said: "Trade Centre Roundabout was a complete nightmare.
"There were cars coming from all directions and it was very dangerous."

Minor planet named after Indian student

MUMBAI: In a rare honour, an Indian student will share the space in the galaxy with eminent scientists such as Einstein and Madam Curie, as the Linear Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the U.S. has named a minor planet, 17095, after him.

The planet, discovered by MIT, has been named "Mahadik Planet" after Bhushan Mahadik, an alumni of Fr. Agnel Junior College at Navi Mumbai, Principal of the college Fr. S. Almeida told PTI here on Sunday.

Mahadik, now now pursuing undergraduate studies in Berkley, U.S. in recognition of his achievement as a finalist in 2003 in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held at Ohio, U.S., Fr. Almeida said.

Minor planets comprise material left over from formation of the solar system, most likely that never coalesced into a planet because of Jupiter's gravitational influence.

Ever since the first minor planet was discovered in 1801 and named "Ceres" after the Roman Goddess, about 20 per cent of the current minor planets have received a name.

Baghdad: Former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein is likely to face just 12 charges when he is tried for crimes against humanity later in the year. A spokesman for the Iraqi government said there were more than 500 potential cases being brought against Saddam, but that there would be little point in pursuing them all. "There is no reason to waste time in dealing with them all," said government spokesman Leith Kubba. "We are completely confident that the 12 fully documented charges that have been brought against him are more than sufficient to ensure he receives the maximum sentence," Kubba told journalists. Saddam is accused of committing a string of crimes against humanity during over two decades in power. AMRITSAR, MAY 9: Just a few years ago, it was a one-plane stop. But now,
Rajasansi Airport is fast becoming a buzzing hub of international action-and
getting a new look, too.
Singapore Airline, which landed here four months ago, has been going
full-three days a week. And with a new terminal likely to open in October,
British Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Phuket Airlines, Tajikistan Airlines,
Uzbek Airways and Air-India are also lining up a landing here, say
officials.

With Air-India starting its Amritsar-Birmingham-Toronto-Amritsar service on
May 15, the number of flights will go up to 56 a week-a big leap from a mere
three in 1997. Even cargo flights, such as those of Ariana to Kabul, are
planning to double their flights from three to six in a week, while First
Flight, a courier service, has evinced interest in starting operations, say
officials.

India's worst war, but most heroic moments

July 10, 1944. 5th Maratha Regiment's Yeshwant Ghadge, all of 22, was caught
in a mortal combat in the Upper Tiber Valley of Italy. Except for his
commander, his platoon had been wiped out by enemy machine-gunners. With no
alternative left, Ghadge rushed the machine gun nest, lobbing grenades,
knocking off the gun and the gunner. He charged, shot another enemy. With no
time to change his magazine, Ghadge clubbed to death two remaining enemy
gunners. Ghadge finally fell to an enemy sniper.

India's memories of the World War II are made of such tales of exceptional
valour. Fought for the British masters, it was India's biggest and worst
war. It was also a war where Indians were on either sides.

While some 2.5 million Indians fought the war for British rulers, a few
thousand men and women joined the Germany-Japan-Italy (Axis Powers)
alliance, under Subhash Chandra Bose, hoping to overthrow the British rulers
from India. Bose's venture was romantic and is an awe-inspiring chapter in
India's freedom struggle.

But for most of the Indians who donned uniforms during World War II, it was
only to earn their daily bread. Though the war was not India's, Indians were
among the most heroic, borne out by the fact that they won over 4,000
gallantry awards, among them almost 20 Victoria Crosses. Over 36,000
Indians were killed. Official estimates put the wounded at 64,000.

in the first democratic elections of South Africa's history.

Pretoria today, attended by politicians and dignitaries from more than 140
countries around the world.

Two more students held; University officials suspect insider role

CHENNAI: The probe into the `answer sheet scam' expanded on Sunday, with
Anna University discovering that two more groups of students from Chennai's
suburbs had been involved in switching answer sheets of semester
examinations before evaluation.

University officials, who are helping the Central Crime Branch of Greater
Chennai police in the wide-ranging probe, do not rule out greater inside
involvement.

The police on Sunday arrested two more students of Valliammai Engineering
College, near here.

They were identified as Narendra Raghava (21) and Ramesh Kumar (21) from
Guduvanchery, final year Electronics and Communications Engineering
students. Seven students and three daily wagers of Anna University were
arrested on Saturday. On Sunday, all 12 were remanded to judicial custody
for 15 days.

Kattumadom Narayanan passes away

THRISSUR: Noted writer and expert on tantric rituals Kattumadom Narayanan,
74, died on Sunday morning at Vanneri, near Ponnani.

He is survived by his wife, Padmini Antharjanam, three daughters and a son.
He had been ailing for some time. The writer died while being taken to the
hospital.

The writer was considered to be an authority on Greek classics.

His critical works `Introduction to Sophocles' and `Introduction to
Malayalam theatre' and the Malayalam play `Shudhalmakkal' have won plaudits.
He has also authored several books and penned numerous articles. He was a
member of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi and the Sangeetha Nataka Akademi.

serious indictment of the Vajpayee regime.

Today in 1945 : Germany signs unconditional surrender

Germany has signed an unconditional surrender bringing to an end six years
of war in Europe, according to reports from France.
This evening the Ministry of Information has confirmed that an official
statement declaring the end of the war, will be made simultaneously in
London, Washington and Moscow tomorrow.
The day has been declared a national holiday to mark Victory in Europe Day
(VE Day). The following day (9 May) will also be a national holiday.
The BBC's Thomas Cadett watched the official signing at a schoolhouse in
Reims, northeastern France, which serves as the advance headquarters of the
supreme commander in Europe, General Dwight D Eisenhower.
The head of the SS, Heinrich Himmler, had tried to broker a peace deal two
months before but he had attached conditions to the agreement: he wanted to
keep the Nazi regime in place and stop Soviet progress into Germany.

CAG raps IAF for "gross irregularities"

New Delhi, May 7. (PTI): In a severe censure of the Nagpur-based Air Force
Maintenance Command, the Comptroller and Auditor General has rapped it for
gross "irregularities" in purchase of mosquito nets worth Rs 8.30 crores
from Reliance Industries in a single vendor purchase.
The procurement order first for 1.12 lakh mesh polyester mosquito nets worth
Rs 5.57 crores was placed on single vendor basis by the wrong issue of
"proprietary article certificate" in favour of the Reliance Industries by
claiming that it was the sole manufacturer of the fabric, CAG said in its
latest report tabled in Parliament.
CAG said the IAF command had gone in for repeat order for 55,000 more nets
worth Rs 2.73 crores on the same firm at even higher prices.
