Telugu words found in Hebrew literature

W. Chandrakanth

A 1794 BC stone tablet established that the Sumerian-Assyrian culture had its roots in Andhra Pradesh

Samyuktha Koonaiah

CHENNAI: In a path-breaking revelation, a young research scholar of Potti Sriramulu Telugu University has come out with recorded evidence linking Telugus and Israelis on the basis of Telugu words found in Hebrew literature.

The disclosure was made by Samyuktha Koonaiah in her presentation at a seminar on `Telugu History and Culture' on the concluding day of the three-day All India Telugu Conference here on Sunday. She quoted epigraphic evidence traced from Bahrain in support of her argument.

Ms. Samyuktha, who is doing her research on `Andhra Pradesh - The missing link - Tilmun language and Telugu', said a 1794 BC stone tablet established that the Sumerian-Assyrian culture had its roots in Andhra Pradesh.

Interesting revelations

In fact, an article titled `The Seafaring Merchants of Ur' published in the American Oriental Society in1954 by A. L. Oppenheim contains several Telugu words to prove that Abraham migrated from the `land of darkness', the `Andhaka Desa' as the Andhra region was known in the past, she said.

Research findings suggest that `Barbar' or `Barbaras', a native tribe living in the south of the Vindhyas was a common name in Assyrian culture. An earliest instance of calling children `Bullutu' was similar to that of the Telugu usage Bulli, Bullodu etc, she said. Another `provincial spelling' in Telmun literature and references to Sumero-Akkadian vocabularies contain this sentence `ni imta ha-is' similar to that of `nee intiki vachchi' (come to my home).

Letter on tablet

A stone tablet also contained a letter from a seafarer to a local trader demanding to know why he did not sell a particular commodity at a price agreed upon and why it was not weighed properly too.

Old Babylonian legal documents which were unearthed by archaeologists contain evidence of this letter belonging to one member of the Guild of Dilmun, Ea-Nasir. One of its lines when pronounced in Telugu becomes "ayya adhi annakimmani, tusi (tuchi) immani, maaki antundhi" (something to the effect `I have asked you to give it to my brother after weighing'. It was a deal about copper ingots.

Telling proof

Quoting several such examples Ms. Samyuktha said there was sufficient proof to link those Sumerian cultures with the Telugus. Hebrew, Sumerian and Assyrian records abound in such descriptions and suggest that the present Israelis belonged to Andhra Pradesh.

Ms. Samyuktha argues that Kamakur village in Balayapalli mandal of Nellore district still has 21 Jewish families. Only they are not even aware that they are Jews. She is one among them and her first name Kooniah could be found in Hebrew as Koni, she says.

1. NRIs Being Bullish on Indian Stock Market
(Source: www.nrirealtynews.com)

NRI investments in Indian Equities have certainly shot up over the past few months. The market alone accounted to NRI investments worth Rs 1bn in less than two months. High rupee-dollar rate was what putting off the NRI investors from pumping in Indian stocks. But, the latest corrections in the market again opened all the doors for NRI investments. As per the figures showcased by BSE data, NRIs were net buyers at Rs 286.8m and Rs 703m in February and March, respectively. In January, they were sellers at Rs 21.6m. NRIs, foreign firms, and individuals may be allowed to make investments in the local stock markets by registering with foreign institutional investors (FIIs), who will further be responsible for any transgression of investment and regulatory norms in sub- accounts and will have to carry out all checks on the investors. Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) will have to redraft its rules and regulations relating to FIIs to facilitate the amendments. Likewise, RBI will require modify the Foreign Exchange Management regulations since NRIs just have the permission to invest only through Portfolio Investment Schemes.

3. NRIs deposit rates revised
(Source: RBI Annual Credit Policy Review)

In the context of large capital inflows and implications for liquidity and monetary management, the interest rate prescriptions related to NRI deposits, viz., foreign currency non-resident (banks) (FCNR(B)) deposits and Non-Resident (External) Rupee Account (NR(E)RA) deposits have been revised. Non-resident Indians (NRI) will now have to settle for lower returns from their deposits in India. The central bank has reduced the ceiling on NRI deposits - FCNR (B) and NRE - by 50 basis points.

4. RBI ups cap for priority sector lending (Source: Economic Times, India - 30 Apr 2007 & RBI Annual Credit Policy Review)
Banks can now lend more funds to the housing sector with the Reserve Bank of India increasing the cap for home loans under priority sector to Rs 20 lakh from 15 lakh earlier. 5. NRI Property Investments Put India on Emerging Markets Map
(Source: www.nrirealtynews.com)

Currencies Direct, the London based organisation which offers international payment services and commercial foreign exchange, puts India as the 5th most favourite destination for overseas property investors. Surprisingly, India's financial transactions being conducted in the English language add to its USP, and are welcomed by British investors who also find Indian banking and finance laws non-cumbersome and investor friendly.

With the economy performing above par at an average of 6% in the current decade, the growing volumes of the middle class offer a platform for increased demand and sustained growth.

6. Encouraging Monetary Moves to Revive NRI Investments
(Source: www.nrirealtynews.com)

Experts are expecting a slew of measures to control inflation further and the steps taken by the RBI so far have improved market sentiment to a large extent. The move to raise the growth level for non-food credit to 24 to 25% recognizes the fact that the demand for credit by corporates would not improve. Instead of restricting the external borrowing, the RBI has resorted to measures that would encourage dollar outflows. The move to allow Indian companies to invest overseas upto thrice their net worth and permitting a higher investment portfolio overseas of 35% has also been greeted by Indian industry. These encouraging measures would enable overseas expansion by Indian companies. However, bringing down interest rates on NRI deposits may dampen NRI investments in India marginally, and affect the liquidity in the banking system, leading to a scramble for NRI funds amongst banks. It is the economist's fervent hope that this is just a transitory phase, as improved business investment is expected by mid-2007, with a positive financing gap, higher profits, low debt ratios, active cash flow and low real interest rates falling in place.

The Drovers

Shirley Toulson

In a bygone age when few people travelled far from their homes and almost any journey was an adventure the drovers regularly made the long and perilous trip from the Scottish highlands and islands or from the Welsh mountains to the south-east of England. They brought vast herds of cattle from the hill farms of the north and west to the markets of London and other towns. Sheep, pigs, geese and turkeys were also driven to the towns. In this book Shirley Toulson tells of these hardworking and resourceful men and of the dangers and hardships they faced. She describes the animals they drove and the way they conducted their business, and she outlines some of the routes they followed, as well as indicating features of the countryside which may reveal the passage of drovers through an area in times past.

Shirley Toulson has been writing books on the social history of the countryside since 1974 and is a leading authority on ancient tracks and drove roads.

File Conversion ?

A file conversion toolbox for converting files from one format to
another is very essential. Though free conversion tools are available
for some file types (like Wav to MP3), such free tools are still not
available for certain other file types (like PDF to Doc). In this
context, the availability of online file conversion tools makes our
life less cumbersome. Media convert (http://media-convert.com) is one
such file conversion service.

Recently this author stumbled on another valuable free file conversion
service, ZamZar (http://www2.zamzar. com/). You can convert image
files, video files and PDF/document files with this free service.

While submitting the file for conversion, you need to provide an email
id. Once the file is converted to the desired format, the service
drops an email on your box with a link to the converted file. The
facility (http://www.zamzar.com /tools/) to convert videos from video
sharing services such as Youtube and Google video is another notable
feature of this service.
