Lack of funds for Central Govt ?

Top 100 tax defaulters owe Rs 1.4 lakh crore

New Delhi, Aug. 5 Just 100 tax defaulters owed the Government a whopping Rs 1.4 lakh crore as on March 31, 2009.

Mr Hassan Ali Khan, Pune-based real estate operator and horse racing enthusiast, with an alleged tax liability of Rs 50,345.73 crore, has earned the dubious distinction of topping the list. The late Harshad Mehta of the 1992 stocks scam fame still owes Rs 12,719.14 crore. BSNL owes Rs 2,417.85 crore.

Ms Chandrika Tapuriah, wife of a Kolkata-based businessman, Mr Kashinath Tapuriah, had Rs 20,540.83 crore against her. Mr Kashinath, reportedly a partner of Mr Khan, also figured with a liability of Rs 602.8 crore.

The others in the list, released by the Minister of State for Finance, Mr S.S. Palanimanickam, in the Rajya Sabha, include disgraced stockbrokers Mr A. D. Narottam (Rs 5,781.86 crore) and Mr Hiten Dalal (Rs 4,200.04 crore). In addition, Mr Narottam also owed Rs 195.25 crore under wealth tax outstanding demands, while Harshad Mehta's wealth tax dues were Rs 431.93 crore. Also in the list were Mr Ashwin S. Mehta (Rs 1,595.51 crore) and Mr B.C. Dalal (Rs 1,535.89 crore).
 Corporates
Among corporates, Sahara India Financial Corporation ranked sixth with arrears of Rs 3,063.58 crore.

The other firms are Sahara India (Rs 1,945.8 crore), Sahara Airlines (Jet Lite India - Rs 850 crore), IDBI (Rs 964.12 crore), NTPC Ltd (Rs 622.18 crore), Coca-Cola India (Rs 600 crore), Oracle Corporation (Rs 558.54 crore), VSNL (Rs 507.55 crore), SBI (Rs 333.65 crore), Satyam Computer Services (Rs 290 crore), Tata Industries (Rs 251 crore), Tata Motors (Rs 206.55 crore), IBM (Rs 208 crore).

The outstanding demands include those not recovered for various reasons such as demand notified under Special Court, inadequate assets and companies under litigation, the Minister said.
 Who wins?
Mr Ajay Kumar, Executive Director, PricewaterhouseCoopers, told Business Line that if the dispute is purely on legal points, generally the courts have favoured the assessees. But regarding concealment of income, the Tax Department stands a winning chance if it has built up a good case on the basis of data and declared investments.

"While compliance level and recovery is good in developed countries, it is poor in India due to the inordinate delays in the legal procedures," he added.

On its part, to expedite the recovery of the default amount, the Government has set up a task force to monitor the recovery of huge amounts. The Government has also decided to identify cases involving substantial amount pending before the Income-Tax Commissioner (Appeals) and the Income-Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) to dispose of appeals early.

It has also requested the Settlement Commission to dispose of high demand cases expeditiously.

“I am on Left,” says Amartya Sen

"I am on Left," says Amartya Sen Hasan Suroor
There is no such thing as "perfect" justice, he argues

Everyone is interested in justice as they see it

The stress should be on removing more visible forms of injustice

LONDON: Amartya Sen has called for the Indian Left to regard him as a friend saying that his criticism of the Left parties over their stand on the India-U.S. nuclear deal did not detract from the fact that he was very much a man of the Left.

"I am on Left and if Left want me I'm delighted," he said noting good-humouredly that he was criticised in India for questioning the Left's fury over the nuclear deal when, in his view, there were more pressing issues such as poverty and malnutrition to be furious about.

His inspiration

Speaking about his new book, 'The Idea of Justice,' to a full-house at the London School of Economics on Monday, Prof. Sen repeatedly referred to leading Marxist thinkers — including, of course, Marx's own writings — while presenting his alternative approach to mainstream theories of justice that he challenges in his book.

He said he was not claiming to break new ground by offering a comparative theory of justice and mentioned Adam Smith, Mary Wollstonecraft and Karl Marx among those whose works represented different versions of comparative thinking. Instead of looking for a "perfectly just society" they were more interested in the removal of "manifest" injustices from the world. His own idea of justice was inspired by their thinking.

Prof. Sen said that people often asked: "Who's interested in justice?" And, yet, the fact was that at some level —consciously or subconsciously — everyone was interested in justice as they saw it.

"I remember my son when he was three complaining that his sister was not being 'just' to him!" he quipped.

As in his previous lectures on the issue, the Nobel Laureate argued that there was no such thing as "perfect" justice; that justice was relative to a situation; and that instead of searching for "ideal" justice, the stress should be on removing the more visible forms of injustice such as subjugation of women, poverty and malnutrition.

Effective approach

For example, if U.S. President Barack Obama was able to push through his healthcare reforms, it would mean removing a massive manifest injustice that affected more than 40 million Americans who didn't have access to health. This was a far more effective approach to fighting injustice than getting bogged down in the idea of "institutional justice"— the belief that once "just" institutions were created justice would follow.

'Niti' and 'Nyaya'

Prof. Sen said Indian philosophy made the distinction between institutional justice and the actual "realisation" of justice. This was denoted by the two Sanskrit words "niti" — the principle of justice; and "nyaya" meaning delivering justice on the ground. His book is an argument for "nyaya."

"The idea of justice demands comparisons of actual lives that people can lead, rather than a remote search for ideal institutions. That is what makes the idea of justice relevant as well as exciting in practical reasoning," Prof. Sen says in his book.

In a wide-ranging speech and during his interaction with the audience, Prof Sen dealt with a host of issues, including the meaning of human rights, equity and fairness — and inevitably recounted his favourite story about three children who quarrel over a flute all arguing that their claim was the most ``just."

wolfram-math-integration

It allows you to solve complex integration problems with a click of a button. Just enter your integration string and click the compute online button to see solution in few seconds. Fwd: Ever Wondered Why Ratan Tata is not in the list of Forbes Billionaires?

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Nath, Jayesh
Date: Thu, May 14, 2009 at 10:28 AM
Subject: Ever Wondered Why Ratan Tata is not in the list of Forbes Billionaires?
To:

A fwd worth reflecting on ...

Here is a Real Story of Ratan Tata.
So many people around the world want to know that "What is the Net
Worth of Ratan Tata"?

TATA Group is running 96 businesses and out of which 28 Companies are
publically listed on the various stock exchanges.
Tata Group is world's top 50 Group according to Market capitalization
and Reputation.

Have you ever thought why Ratan tata's name is not in the list of
billionaire' s club? why Ratan Tata is not a billionaire on the Forbes
magazine list of billionaire people of the world?

The reason is that, TATA Group's 96 companies are held by its main
Company "TATA Sons" and the main owner of this TATA Sons is not Ratan
Tata but various charitable organizations developed and run by TATA
Group.

Out of which JRD TATA Trust & Sir Ratan Tata Trust are the main.
65% ownership of TATA Sons which is the key holding company of the
other 96 TATA Group Company is held by various charitable
organizations.

So this 65% ownership ownership of Tatasons Limited is not reflected
on Ratan Tata's personal Financial Statement but on the various
charitable organizations. and this is the reason why Ratan Tata is not
in the list of Billionaire club.

if we put this 65% ownership of Tata Sons in Ratan TATA's own personal
financial statement then Ratan Tata's Net worth can become more than $
70 billion. and that's much more than the Warren Buffet's Current Net
Worth of $ 62 billion, the world's richest person according to Forbes
magazine 2008.

However, it doesn't mean that Ratan Tata is poor. In one interviews he
had told the reporter that, "I have my own Capital". He is the
chairman of Tata Group so obviously he earns lots of money every year
as a bonus, remuneration and salary. However, Ratan Tata's Net worth
is not $ 1 Billion.

He is not a billionaire on paper. but in reality he is the richest
person of the world. His net worth in reality is more than Bill Gates
and Warren Buffet.
SO the good thing about Tata Group is that, They do Charity out of
their Money...

And that is the reason TATA Group has generated so much of Goodwill
over last 5 generations.

Truth about Rahul's MPhil

A facsimile of certificate issued by University of Cambridge in the name of 'Mr Raul Vinci', the pseudonym given to Rahul Gandhi by British authoritie

First Published : 07 Apr 2009 02:55:00 AM IST
Last Updated : 07 Apr 2009 07:57:33 AM IST
CHENNAI: Rahul Gandhi appears to have been economical with the truth on his affidavit while filing his election nomination papers in Amethi this weekend. In the affidavit, he states that he obtained an MPhil from Trinity College of the University of Cambridge, UK, in 1995, in Developmental Economics. A certificate from the University shows that not only has he got dates wrong, he has even got the name of the course he took incorrect.Worse, the man touted as a future prime minister failed one of his four papers.Rahul got 58 per cent in "National Economic Planning and Policy" (according to the grading scale given in the certificate, 60 per cent is the minimum for a pass). The certificate, shown alongside, was issued a year ago by Diana Kazemi, the secretary of the department of Development Studies (and not Developmental Economics) in which Rahul Gandhi studied. He enrolled under the name 'Raul Vinci', a pseudonym given by the British authorities in a common practice as there are a good number of VVIP wards from around the world enrolled at British educational institutions. The pseudonym came to light during the 2004 elections in the Telegraph and the Hindu.According to the University, Rahul read for the MPhil in 2004- 05, and not in 1994-95, as stated in his affidavit. His affidavit's other claim, to have obtained his Bachelors from Rollins College in Florida, USA, is true (and is a departure from earlier claims by 'supporters' that he graduated from Harvard). He also briefly attended St Stephen's College in Delhi, gaining admission through the sports quota. His mother (and Congress president) Sonia Gandhi was also in a minor controversy in 2004 over her educational qualifications. Her nomination papers' affidavit claimed she obtained a certificate in English from Lennox Cook School, University of Cambridge, in 1965. After it was revealed that the school had no affiliation to the University, Sonia claimed that the error on the affidavit was the result of a secretarial typing mistake.

Fwd: Participate in Earth Hour

http://www.goodearthhomes.net/

Dear  Friends,

From melting glaciers to increasingly intense weather patterns, we know that climate change is already impacting life on our planet.

On Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 8:30 pm, Good Earth and our employees will take part in Earth Hour — the world's largest global climate change event. By simply turning out all non-essential lighting for one hour at our company buildings and in our own homes, we will join tens of millions of concerned citizens throughout the world in calling for action to save our planet for future generations.

We'd like to encourage you, one of our valued customers, to join us in this important and inspiring effort.

Led by the World Wildlife Fund, more than 50 million people in 370 cities around the world took part in Earth Hour last year. The lights went out at Sydney's Opera House, Rome's Coliseum, the Empire State Building and the Golden Gate Bridge. Even the Google homepage went dark for the day.

This year, Earth Hour will be even bigger. In India, cities large and small have said they'll participate including New Delhi & Mumbai with more signing up daily. They will join international cities such as Beijing, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Helsinki, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, London, Manila, Mexico City, Moscow, New York, Paris, Rome, and Toronto.

To get a better sense of the magnitude and inspiring nature of the event, take a moment to watch WWF's video about Earth Hour 2009 by visiting www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjWD8pbK5t8.

Participating in Earth Hour is easy, fun and absolutely free. To get more information and to sign up to for Earth Hour 2009, just visit www.earthhour.in  and agree to turn out your lights from 8:30-9:30 pm on March 28, 2009.

Energy efficiency isn't just good for the bottom line. As citizens of the world, we all have a stake in the future of our planet and must seek to operate in ways that don't deplete our world's limited natural resources.

In the weeks leading up to Earth Hour, we will be taking a closer look at ways we can operate more efficiently, waste less and reduce our environmental footprint—not only in our own operations, but throughout our supply chain. That's because all of us here at Good Earth care about the future of our world and want to do what we can to make a positive difference.

Saravana Bhavan restaurateur gets life for murder

Chennai: P Rajagopal, founder of the popular Saravana Bhavan hotel
chain, was on Thursday sentenced to life in a murder case by the
Madras High Court that enhanced his 10-year rigorous imprisonment
awarded by a trial court.

A division bench convicted Rajagopal and six others for the 2001
murder. The court also increased his conviction from culpable homicide
not amounting to murder, to culpable homicide amounting to murder.

Rajagopal, 59, who had founded the Saravana Bhavan chain of hotels
worldwide in 1981, had been found guilty of murdering an employee
Prince Shantakumar in 2001. A fast track court had in 2004 sentenced
him to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 50.5 lakhs.

Rajagopal had also been accused of sexually harassing Shantakumar's
widow, Jeevajothi, and the daughter of another employee Ramaswamy.

Of the fine, Rs 50 lakh was to be handed over to Jeevajothi, the court
had ruled.

Rajagopal, who was rearrested for violating bail conditions during his
trial after allegedly attempting to threaten Jeevajothi, had appealed
to the high court.

The Saravana Bhavan chain of hotels and restaurants, popular for their
range of idlis, dosas and the like, gained further notoriety in
November 2008 after Rajagopal's son P Shiva Kumar was arrested on a
charge of forging documents to smuggle people into the US.

The charges were based on the findings of the US consulate. The arrest
also resulted in the cancellation of several lucrative contracts of
the hotel chain to supply food to American diplomatic missions.

According to the hotel group's website, its outlets are located
"across 22 outlets in South India, three in the North and seven
countries with 22 outlets across the globe".

A railwayman’s unsung sacrifice

A railwayman's unsung sacrifice Rahi Gaikwad
Family mourns Assistant Chief Ticket Inspector Sushil Kumar Sharma, killed in terrorist firing

Sushil Kumar Sharma

Mumbai: Siddhant Sharma, 17, is angry. His slain father's unsung deed on the night of November 26 has left him with an unanswered question. "Why have they not acknowledged my father's [fearless] act?"

Assistant Chief Ticket Inspector Sushil Kumar Sharma, 48, was killed in the terrorist firing at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus that night.

The Sharma family shares Siddhant's anguish. "As told by his fellow colleagues, Sushil was at his office near the station manager's office when the firing started. He immediately headed to the control room to inform the staff of the firing and alert them about the danger posed to incoming trains. Then, on his return, he was moving towards the injured to offer help. That's when he was shot at," says his elder brother, Mahendra Kumar Sharma.

An official letter from the Central Railway states: "Despite several requests from staff at the control office not to go out, Shri Sharma without caring for his life was rushing towards the Mail Line Concourse. However, before he could help other passengers in saving their lives, two bullets hit him and he lost his life."

One bullet hit his shoulder and the other perforated his lungs. While the incident could have occurred between 9.30 am and 10 p.m., no medical aid arrived till about 2.30 a.m. when the railways resumed their operations, says Mr. Mahendra Kumar. At this time, his family members, who were frenetically calling his phone, finally heard a voice at the other end. However, it belonged to a police officer, who told them of Sushil's demise.

While the railway staff who made announcements over the public address system of the attack received accolades, there have been no words of praise for Sushil, who sought to alert and help others instead of seeking the safety of his office. Concern for others was a quality that won Sushil many a faithful friend and well-wisher. Some of his friends have penned eulogies in his memory. "Smile never left his lips/It sent all woes away," says a poem by a friend. A fond letter written by another friend describes him as a "cheerful" person. "Whenever anybody went to him with any problem, he used to solve it in a jiffy."

Mr. Mahendra Kumar realised the extent of his brother's popularity when he came to Mumbai from Gwalior. "On November 28 when we came here, autorickshaws in Kalyan [where Sushil's home is situated] did not charge us or any of our relatives visiting us. Neither did the newspaper vendor round the corner. And for days, the local tea-seller would come home to serve tea for visitors for free."

Yadavendra Kumar Pandey, a cousin of Sushil's, recounts: "I wanted to send a parcel after this incident. It weighed 132 kg. Eight porters lifted it. I happened to mention Sushil. Then I do not know what transpired among them, but none accepted any money!" For his family, the ever-helpful Sushil was the backbone. Emotion gives way as Ragini Sharma, his wife, begins to speak of him. "He was caring, soft-hearted," she says, unable to hold back her tears. "He used to say, 'Ragini, everyone lives for oneself. One should live for others."

In their own quiet way, Sushil's two sons are trying to cope with their pain. Siddhant is preparing for the IIT entrance test.

In fact, on November 26, Sushil had gone to work only to get the IIT test form. He would have stayed home otherwise for it was his younger son Aditya's 12th birthday.

Aditya's easy and childlike ways only belie the sorrow within. "From the way he keeps flitting about, I know what he is going through. When I ask him, 'do you think of papa,' he gets upset and says, 'why do you keep asking me that?' Like us adults, he cannot express what he is feeling," says Ms. Ragini.

The Sharmas are currently locked in paperwork over compensation. Says Mr. Mahendra Kumar, "We have still not received the Rs. 3 lakh ex-gratia from Central Railway. Neither have we heard anything about the Railway Minister's compensation. Only the State government amount has come in."

The family is also planning to seek compensation for those security officers who fought the terrorists. "We feel that even civilians who went outside the bounds of their duty to help should be considered for this. As Sushil did. So, we will write to the authorities. However, money is not our concern. We want him to get the recognition due to him. His act was a step towards countering terrorist activity," reasons Mr. Mahendra Kumar.
